Adweek asks this week whether Univision and Telemundo will see an increase in ad spending during the 2008 presidential election.
I gave the trade publication my thoughts on the connection between the presidential candidates debate and the effort to attract campaign dollars: "It's an effort that can directly lead to increased political spending. If a candidate comes on your network and they see the value, they're going to be more likely to invest in Spanish TV advertising." But there is no solid answer to this question at this point, especially since we're months ago from the first primary contests. Sure, record funds will be poured in general-market TV ads in battleground states this election. But it's unclear whether the candidates, parties and interest groups will put more money into the Spanish-language medium than in the past. Many factors could cause the spend to increase or possibly even decrease from 2004. But the biggest factor might be: how important will the Hispanic vote be to the major candidates. In a close election, like the ones in '00 and '04, it's likely more money will be spent battling for the Hispanic vote. But it's just too early to say definitively at this point. Escrito PorAdam J. lunes, septiembre 17, 2007 In a drive reminiscent of campaign ’00, presidential candidate Senator John McCain is aggressively campaigning in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina under the new motto "No Surrender." It’s a photo-op, Iraq war defense and political resurrection all rolled into one. It’s getting the kind of attention you’d expect including the positive and negative. ABC News writes that McCain is "embracing the troop surge and even launching a ’No Surrender’ in Iraq campaign slogan." The New York Times blogs it and links to the Daily Show which jokes about it as the "I’ll See You in Hell Expres." McCain is one of the Senate’s champions of comprehensive immigration reform and he’s well-known and well-connected within the Hispanic community both within his home state of Arizona and nationally. Former Senator John Edwards, a leading Democratic candidate for president, tonight again embraced micro-loans as a method of helping bring Latin Americans out of poverty. MATT.org is working hard on this issue and has already secured a half million dollars for microloans in Mexico in partnership with Kiva (this section of the website is being updated with more info and a link to a new partnership page). Sen. Clinton has spoken about the issue before.

domingo, septiembre 09, 2007 The Democratic presidential candidates met in Miami this evening for the first-ever Spanish-language candidates debate on Univision. The candidates’ statements on the war in Iraq grabbed the AP’s attention: "In the first presidential debate ever broadcast in Spanish, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton insisted it was time to start bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq, regardless of the outcome of a progress report on the war expected in Congress on Monday. Fellow Democratic candidate Bill Richardson challenged Clinton to get every U.S. soldier out, not just some of them." And the AP has a different version out on the Spanish wire.Escrito PorAdam J. The Democratic presidential candidates participate in the historic Univision Dem. candidates debate tonight from the University of Miami. The moderators are Noticias anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas. And each of the Democratic presidential candidates has been given their own English-to-Spanish translator. The media is eating up this debate and focusing on the Hisanic vote today and tomorrow. Among the challenges being talked about: can the Democrats steal the Cuban vote from the Republicans? The Associated Press focuses on the mainstreaming of Univision. As does this columnist.
Update I: I just found this AP article on ABC’s website about Dems. reaching out to Latino voters. And Sun-Sentinel article on Dems. and the Cuban vote. Escrito PorAdam J. Segala las 09:49 AM| 2Comentarios

With an eye toward next year's primaries and in advance of the Univision presidential forum, the campaign of Illinois Senator Barack Obama "announced the endorsement today of former Energy Secretary Federico Pena and named him a National Campaign Co-Chair. Pena was the Mayor of Denver in the 1980’s before President Clinton selected him to serve as the Secretary of Transportation and later the Secretary of Energy in the 1990’s. Pena will also attend the Univision Democratic Presidential Candidate Forum on Sunday in Miami, Florida."
The Obama campaign also recently announced its Latino steering committee in Iowa. Escrito PorAdam J. Segala las 11:11 AM| 0Comentarios
martes, septiembre 04, 2007 Our friend Leslie Sanchez has a brand new book out now on Hispanic Republicans that’s title Los Republicanos (translation: the republicans). USA Today used the term in a recent story about the Nevada presidential caucuses which fall between the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary early next year. A recent promotion e-mail states: Leslie Sanchez explores the history of relations between Republicans and Latinos and offers an intriguing new perspective on how an alliance – or at least a courtship -- would benefit both groups.USA Today reporters blog about Latino Evangelicals and their thoughts on the Republicans spurred by a Dallas Morning News article. Do you think Republicans will gain or lose support from Hispanic voters in the 2008 election? Escrito PorAdam J. Segala las 04:32 PM| 9Comentarios
