La propuesta de reforma migratoria quedó estancada en el Congreso el año pasado y los expertos han dicho que el tema no será tema de debate para los legisladores estadounidenses hasta después de la inauguración del nuevo presidente en enero de 2009.

Sin embargo, los candidatos Barack Obama y John McCain no han dejado de hablar de la inmigración y la reforma migratoria en su intento por captar el voto latino, informó BBC Mundo. Ambos candidatos participarán en importantes eventos latinos este mes, entre ellos las reuniones del Consejo Nacional de La Raza y la Asociación Nacional de Funcionarios Latinos Electos.

"El hecho de que ahora se ha convertido en un gran tema, lo encuentro muy interesante", dijo a BBC Mundo Irene Bloemraad, profesora en sociología de la inmigración en la Universidad de California en Berkeley.

"Eso resalta hasta dónde se ve a los electores latinos como un potencial voto decisivo en las elecciones venideras".

A pesar de que los latinos sólo representan cerca del 9% del electorado, sus votos podrían inclinar la balanza hacia uno u otro candidato.

"Somos América", una coalición de grupos pro-inmigrantes de Colorado, realizará una marcha en Denver durante la celebración de la Convención Nacional Demócrata en esta ciudad a finales de agosto próximo, reportó El Sentinel de Orlando.

La coalición busca promover cuatro puntos que ellos consideran clave para la reforma migratoria: "que no se trate a los inmigrantes como criminales, que se hagan cumplir las leyes sobre los derechos de los inmigrantes, que no se construya el muro en la frontera con México, y que no se separe a las familias." También pide que se le permita a los hijos de indocumentados pagar una cuota reducida para asistir a las universidades estatales.

El candidato republicano a la presidencia de EEUU hablará de inmigración y comercio con el presidente mexicano Felipe Calderón en México, informó Reuters.

"En su viaje por Colombia, McCain se comprometió a impulsar y lograr la aprobación de un Tratado de Libre Comercio entre Estados Unidos y la nación sudamericana si resulta elegido en las elecciones del 4 de noviembre. McCain, quien recibió la noticia del rescate de los rehenes -entre ellos la ex candidata presidencial Ingrid Betancourt- en su viaje a México desde Cartagena, felicitó al Gobierno del presidente colombiano, Alvaro Uribe", reportó Reuters.

El Houston Chronicle reportó hoy que McCain recibió la bendición católica en la Basílica de Guadalupe de México antes de reunirse con el presidente Calderón.

McCain visits Mexico

John McCain is in Mexico now, visiting with President Felipe Calderon, reports the Caucus blog of the NYT.

He’s been joined by Jeb Bush, who says he is confident that McCain will win the White House come November.

McCain’s visit is meant to promote himself as a presidential candidate, but also to talk about U.S.-Mexico relations, namely about immigration, drug trafficking, and trade.

The 76th annual U.S. Conference of Mayors adopted a resolution this week on immigration. Here it is in full—

2008 ADOPTED RESOLUTIONS

CALLING FOR COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM WHICH PROMOTES THE REUNIFICATION OF FAMILIES, PROVIDES LEGAL STATUS WITH A PATH TO EARNED CITIZENSHIP, AND A PLAN FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE IMMIGRANT WORKERS

WHEREAS, The U.S. Conference of Mayors recognizes the economic, social and cultural contributions immigrants bring to their communities; and

WHEREAS, the responsibility of municipal leaders is to protect the wellbeing and safety of all the people residing in their cities; and

WHEREAS, many local governments have passed resolutions, ordinances and policy directives reaffirming non-participation in the enforcement of civil immigration law by city officials and agencies to promote immigrant trust in its police and avert racial profiling and civil rights violations; and

WHEREAS, The International Association of Chiefs of Police Guide to Immigration Issues concludes that local police leaders face a growing set of immigration related duties in the face of scarce and narrowing resources; and

WHEREAS, raids and deportations are increasing in scope and number in recent weeks and months, separating families and spreading terror in our communities; and

WHEREAS, The U.S. Conference of Mayors opposes the separation of families by the enforcement of our current immigration laws and supports the reunification of families that have been so separated, especially those “mixed status” families with U.S. citizen children of which there are an estimated four million children currently in this country; and

WHEREAS, the national political debate on immigration reform has tended to polarize our communities; and

WHEREAS, it is the duty of local governments to respect the rights of and provide equal services to all individuals regardless of national origin or immigration status,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by The U.S. Conference of Mayors acting on behalf of its constituents to call on the President of the United States to issue an executive order to cease and desist in the execution of all raids and deportations that do not relate to our national security or to criminal activity until comprehensive immigration reform is completed and to suspend immediately all deportations of parents with U.S. citizen children; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the U.S. Conference of Mayors supports comprehensive immigration reform which promotes the reunification of families, provides legal status with a path to earned citizenship to the estimated 12 million undocumented workers and designs a plan for current and future immigrant workers.
