Shlomo Reifman, Statistics Deputy Editor at Forbes, posted a profile of presidential candidate Bill Richardson today...

Experiencing Mexican culture first hand and being a governor of a border state gives Richardson a unique view of immigration. While dismissing a border fence as ineffectual in stemming the tide of people illegally crossing our border with Mexico or in providing security for U.S. residents, Richardson advocates increasing border patrols, punishing employers for knowingly hiring undocumented workers and giving the 12 million people illegally living and working in the U.S. a reasonable path to American citizenship. This path includes passing a background check, learning English and paying back taxes and fines. Those who fail to comply with such requirements must leave under his plan.

Bill Richardson is all smoke and mirrors and as ethnically driven as most hispanics are. He talks out of both sides of his mouth.

If he truly believes in what he says, then there are a number of flaws in his approach. The fence is important to slow down the infiltrators so the increased border patrols can catch up with them. Other physical barriers and infrastructure improvements are equally important. If he legalizes all 12 million, he will have created the biggest loophole in his plan and figuratively, in the fence. Instead of creating a disincentive, it extend the incentive for border violations created by the 1986 amnesty. Why is it this is so hard for politicians to understand? So what happens if illegals ignore Richardson's plan and just wait until their kids are 21 and can petition for legal status for the parents, aunts, uncles, etc.? How will Richardson identify, apprehend and deport all those who ignore his plan? (The first thing he needs to change is chain immigration. In other words, any one who fails to pass a background check, learn English and pay back taxes and fines must be ineligible for chain immigration.) Why punish just the employers? Why not punish the illegals too by expeditious involuntary removal? Richardson like most of our politicians doesn't have the courage to deal with this problem in a forthright, effective way.

He doesn't have a snowball's chance in Tijuana of getting the nomination from the donkey party. Most Americans will be turned off by his obvious racist Mexican agenda.

Odds are Richardson will be veep candidate for Hillary. His positions are pragmatic... what he needs to say as governor of New Mexico and what he needs to say to establish an arbitrary "centrist Democrat" position. To put him on the spot, the real issue is not illegals who work, nor re-uniting families. Does he support welfare to immigrants? Does he support the automatic deportation of DUI drivers, child molestors? Does he think that immigrants (legal and illegal) have a "right" to live here, even if they are undesireable? If 12 million are here, don't ship the 11 million good workers back. Deport the 1 million truly undesireables.
