Los Republicanos

Our friend Leslie Sanchez has a brand new book out now on Hispanic Republicans that’s title Los Republicanos (translation: the republicans). USA Today used the term in a recent story about the Nevada presidential caucuses which fall between the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary early next year. A recent promotion e-mail states: Leslie Sanchez explores the history of relations between Republicans and Latinos and offers an intriguing new perspective on how an alliance – or at least a courtship -- would benefit both groups.

USA Today reporters blog about Latino Evangelicals and their thoughts on the Republicans spurred by a Dallas Morning News article.

Do you think Republicans will gain or lose support from Hispanic voters in the 2008 election?

I would suppose before someone ventures an answer, they might try to figure out who it is the question is asked about.

Maybe they might start here: Hispanic, Latino or Chicano? A Historical Review

I don't use a cookie cutter, so I already have my unhelpful non-answers readily at hand.

1. How fill-in-the-blanks vote will depend on which fill-in-the-blanks you ask and which issues they care about come next November.

2. Nobody really knows which issues will be election-deciders come next November.

3. The question is asked at least six months too soon.

But, I do believe I'll read Ms. Sanchez's book. Though she sterotypes Hispanics as "Hispanics," from watching the CBS News video it is quite apparent to me she's not a cookie cutter. Maybe if I read the book, I can figure who everybody is talking about.

I would think they are referring to native Spanish speakers and those from the Hispanic/Mexican culture. I don't know why politicians feel they have to play ethnic politics to gain votes. They should run on a platform that supports the best interests of this country and citizens as a whole. Hispanics are still the minority in this country anyway. Why do politicians have to be soft on illegal immigration and in favor of legalization of them in order to gain the Hispanic vote?

What is every election about? Some big mouth liar offering to do all sorts of stuff that they will NEVER follow through on. The election will be primarily about the war and how the coward liberals want to pull the troops out of everywhere and use the money instead to buy votes by offering more handouts.....the handout of the next election is going to be healthcare. As much as I hate socialized medicine, I guess it's fair since we already give it to tens of millions of criminal invaders, why shouldn't we finally give it to the citizens of this nation instead?

Gregorio, Unlike some of us, most people, Hispanic and otherwise use the terms Hispanic and Latino inter-changably. If pressed they would say that Brazilians are Latino but not Hispanic and not considr it a big deal. Chicano is a much lesser used term because it is seen a Mexican only. Having been active in Hispanic Republican politics since the early 60s I'm eager to read this book. Does it recognize that as with Republicans in general, there are many different types of Hispanic Republicans? Some are anti-illegal immigrant like the Hispanic leader of the Minutemen here in Illinois, my friend Rosanna Pulido. Some are very conservative due to economic issues. Some are very conservative due to social issues. Some are very liberal. Some are pork barrel focused. But both Hispanic and non-Hispanic voters have one thing in common. They do not vote based on issues or ideology. They vote based on who appears to be their "friend" ... or vote against their perceived "enemy". The difference is that Hispanics do this to an exaggerated degree not seen among most other demographic groups.

Bob, you are active in Hispanic Republican politics? May I ask you why? I have never heard you say that you were Hispanic. Just curious.

Tweety, technically I am not Hispanic. But that does not prevent one from joining a political group that has some kind of Hispanic orientation. But I'll admit the whole topic is crazy. I am opposed to affirmative action but was the beneficiary of affirmative action as I was hired to be the only anglo employee of a Puerto Rican group because I was anglo. And I was a member of a Puerto Rican political group that would not allow Mexicans, Cubans, etc to join ... just because I was personal friends with everyone in the group. I've been in Black groups and am not Black. I've been in Polish groups and am not Polish. I've been in the Teamsters but am not a Teamster.

tweety,

My wife is from Michoacan, Mexico. The state of Michoacan is NW of Mexico City and SE of Jalisco/Guadalajar and due East of Puerto Vallarta.

It is a state of mostly mountains and valleys between the mountains. It has some excellent fresh water fishing. Mountains on all sides. Climate is perfect 300 days a year.

Get up in the morning; it's 65F; Birds are singing; sky is clear. The temperature climbs to 75-85F but rarely more. 5PM the thunderclouds roll over the mountain and it rains hard for an hour. 6 PM the sky clears and its a beautiful night of bright stars.

December and January it can rain all day.

Half the towns are ghost towns as everyone from those villages are now here. When the customers left town for the USA, the retail shop keepers, dentists, etc had no customers. So they also had to come north and establish their Supermercado La Michoacana here where their customrs are.

bob, that place sounds like paradise. Too bad that Mexicans won't fix Mexico so that they won't leave their homeland. Having a wife from Mexico, does that sway you in your thinking about illegal immigration into our country?
