Texas executes Mexican despite objections by Bush, international community

The state of Texas executed Jose Medellin, a Mexican citizen convicted of rape and murder, this week, despite objections by both the White House and international authorities, the NYT reports.

Medellin's case is at the center of a debate about whether or not Mexicans in the U.S. are denied fair trials because they were never given an opportunity to talk to a consul. Further, Medellin was a citizen of a country where the death penalty is not allowed.

Both Mexico and the International Court of Justice sent diplomatic missions to the U.S. in an attempt to block or delay the execution. The White House also sent similar messages to Texas.

Oh Matt, you are truly scraping the bottom of the barrel by defending this scumbag who raped and murdered two innocent little girls. Mexico may be happy with having the sixth highest murder rate in the entire world but we want better than that for our children here in the US. PS -- he never would have been executed if he'd stayed in his own country where he belonged.

I read everday but don't comment as much as I used to but I must step in, Irene, when you start saying that Matt is "defending this scumbag". This blog post merely says that Texas executed this man DESPITE objections by the WHITE HOUSE and the INTL COMMUNITY. This post simply REPORTS FACT and DOES NOT OPINE. Stop it, already!

Don't mess with Texas. Kudos to the Texans who did their duty under Texas law. Anyone who listens to Bush these days must have a screw loose. At last we have an example of a state and a people with the spine to tell the international community to piss off.

From what I've read in the San Antonio Express-News today, there were many in Mexico who said that they had no sympathy for a scumbag such as this. Given the current crime wave in Mexico, (the most recent outrage being that of a kidnapped 14 year old boy whose body was found in the trunk of a car in Mexico City), it would not surprise me if you saw a movement there to implement the death penalty. Calderon today sent a measure to the Mexican Congress that would impose life in prison for those convicted of several categories of kidnapping, including current or former policemen involved in the crime. However, that won't be enough if Mexico truly seeks to tame its crime wave.

Hello Missbluebell -- are you working for Matt now? "Further, Medellin was a citizen of a country where the death penalty is not allowed." -- Why did the author chose to post this tidbit of information? Isn't the editorial implication here that Medellin shouldn't have been executed because Mexico doesn't have a death penalty? Moreover, why was this item even posted to begin with? The slaughter of the Bologna family by an illegal in San Francisco was not posted -- until it got on Fox and Lou Dobbs. The slaughter of many other Americans by illegals have not been posted here, although many cases are quite well-known. Clearly there's an agenda here. But it backfired because very few Americans have any sympathy at all for this piece of trash no matter how much Matt whines about it.

Anyways, it's been a great coupla days. Two scumbag murderers bought the farm in Texas, and the racist corrupt thug Kwame Kilpatrick went to jail in Detroit. The mills of God grind slow but fine.

I just love stories with a happy ending..... Americans need to wake up and understand that international law does NOT apply to the US and it's time that we stop caring what all of the other liberal nations think about us and the enforcement of OUR laws

Um no I don't work for Matt and you know it. Anyway that's besides the point -- the point being that this blog doesn't editorialize, it only summarizes important immigration stories from MSM and blogosphere for its readers. The quote you speak of - "Further, Medellin was a citizen of a country where the death penalty is not allowed." - was a fact stated in the NYT article this post linked to. I don't see how you think the murder in SF is bigger news than this first-time-ever international news.

Hi Bluebell, We all know that the NY Slimes is an open-borders slut and of course they were editorializing that this p.o.s. shouldn't have been executed because Mexico doesn't have a death penalty. And of course Matt was happy to repeat their editorializinng. This post is just another Matt sob story about how terrible it is that we are a nation of laws that we expect Mexicans to obey. I could see why an ultra-left-wing, open borders apologist like yourself would think that an "internatoinal story" is more important than the story of a whole family being slaughtered by an illegal immigrant WHO WAS PROTECTED FROM FEDERAL IMMIGRATION LAWS BY A TAXPAYER FUNDED CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO PROGRAM. Many Americans such as myself are fans of sovereignty and national self-determination, and we happen to think that US citizens being gunned down in the street with the aid and abettance of TAXPAYER FUNDED GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS, is a very big deal indeed.
