Op/Ed: Pushing Back on Immigration

Escrito Por Daniela a las 01:06 PM | Comentar | Imprimir | Enviar a Correo

Today's opinion selection comes to us from the editorial board of the NYTimes—

As with anything in the immigration debate, there are complicated truths at work here. Many companies have operated with impunity in hiring and abusing undocumented low-wage workers, people who are all the more compliant because they are illegal. Like immigrants, good employers need a path to get right and stay right with the law. Current immigration law — with far too few visas and no path to legalization for the undocumented — does not provide one, and misguided state and local enforcement efforts simply layer on the confusion. They impose undue hardships on by-the-books businesses and reward the exploiters.

If the country is ever going to emerge from the immigration chaos that Congress bequeathed it last year, it will be because business interests — largely seen as AWOL in the bitter debate — finally joined the fight.

We should not depend on businesses to bring enlightened policies to the table. If they had their way, we would throw open the floodgates to more aliens and to amnesty for those who are already here. Enlightened business leaders would agree on pay and benefits for foreign workers commensurate with what they have to pay citizen labor with equivalent skills, including English language skills. This should be especially true with regard to the health care coverage for foreign workers and their families. Businesses not only exploit the workers but shift business expenses to the public in terms of emergency room costs, hospital closures, social services, law enforcement, etc. If business needs workers, it needs to be more specific about those needs and be willing to pay the full cost of those workers and provide English language instruction during lunch hours and after work.

ulty, our beloved Dee is on SFgate.com today, ranting about the illegal alien killer of the Bologna family! That crazed lunatic is so obsessed with getting her raza into the US, she even defends a sanctuary policy that resulted in the slaughter of an entire American family! All she cares about is her raza. It is really frightening to see how fanatic these pro-illegal Mexican nationalists really are, check it out: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article/comments/view?f=/c/a/2008/07/19/MNK011MAFR.DTL&o=40 I pray that Mrs. Bologna sues the City of S.F. for every freakin' dime it's got.
