Dialogue & Culture: US-Mex Relations
MATT Board Meeting Yields Key Agreements
By Cristina Sosa Noriega, MATT Editorial Staff
Wednesday, August 22, 2007
The MATT Board of Directors convened in San Antonio, Texas on August 17, immediately following MATT’s first “Thinking Together” Immigration Roundtable. Four key action items resulted, each of which are designed to strengthen MATT’s mission and expand on existing programs and events:
1. New Mission Statement and Purpose Approved.
We are Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together. We offer solutions for improving relations between the U.S. and Mexico.
We stand for the prosperity of our two countries, because we love and understand both countries and both cultures.
We are the voice of reason influencing policy to improve U.S./Mexico relations.
Our mission is to encourage Mexicans and Americans to come together to bridge the gaps in understanding and quality of life so that we may truly prosper together.
MATT.org- Let’s Prosper Together.
2. New Resolution Approved and Signed by All Board Members.
Matt.org resolves to be the guiding national force in helping resolve the immigration issue in The United States and Mexico.
Furthermore, MATT resolves to be the voice of reason working to influence policy to make life better for the citizens of both countries, and the only national organization able to bring conservatives and liberals, Democrats and Republicans, national, state and local leaders together.
MATT.org will continue in its work to realize the vision of our chairman Alonso Ancira in creating a better quality of life for the citizens of Mexico and The United States, helping to create more and better jobs in Mexico, helping to find incentives for those who want to return to their home countries to do so, and helping those who stay in the U.S. succeed.
3. MATT Provides $100,000 Gift to IME Scholarships.
MATT.org made a gift of $100,000 to the Institute for Mexicans Abroad Scholarship program (Instituto De Los Mexicanos En El Exterior – IME Becas) for college courses and continuing education programs for adult Mexican nationals with dual citizenship and Mexican immigrants currently living in the U.S.
The IME Becas program works in partnership with community-based organizations that assist Mexicans living in the U.S. The scholarships are targeted for adult Mexicans who want to further their education here in the U.S.
The scholarships can be used for programs such as English-as-Second language (ESL) course to scholarships for college courses.
The IME Becas program also funds non-profit organizations with grants for programs that assist Mexicans living in the U.S.
4. MATT Will Sponsor the 25th Annual Border Governors Conference Next Month
MATT will be the sole sponsor of the 25th annual Border Governor’s conference, to be held this year in Sonora, Mexico on September 26 and 27. The 10 governors from border states (4 from the U.S.-- Texas, California, New Mexico and Arizona-- and 6 from Mexico-- Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora and Tamaulipas) will discuss border issues.
This meeting has special significance because Mexicans and Americans represent the global multi-cultural future. Our region offers a unique combination of resources that makes a border boom very possible. At this meeting, these 10 governors will sow the seeds to make it happen.
They will do this by addressing the border issues making today’s headlines: Immigration reform, more jobs, cleaner environment, more efficient energy, better education, lowering crime and more, setting in motion a prosperity plan for the next 25 years.
Matt.org is the exclusive sponsor of this historic meeting because we believe the border boom is within our reach. And because we can help.
