This week we told you about President-elect Obama meeting with Mexican president Calderón, but we’ve also received a press release from the White House about the Mexican head of state meeting outgoing President Bush.

The official press release from the Office of the Press Secretary is a word-for-word account of the statements Bush and Calderón gave to the press yesterday in D.C. We’d especially like to highlight the following excerpt, from Bush:

I want to talk about two subjects quickly.  One, Americans are concerned about the battle that’s taking place in Mexico, and I want our fellow citizens to understand that this man understands the responsibilities of government to provide security; that he will not allow his country, or parts of his country, to be taken over by narco-traffickers; and that the United States of America wants to share and help deal with the issue on both sides of the border.  The less drugs we use, the less pressure there will be in Mexico.  We have got responsibilities to help prevent guns from going from the United States into Mexico.

Amazing how well mr. Bush understand the problem, my question is; why he didn't do nothing in his administration?.

Mr. Bush had 8 years to deal with these problems.  All we have to show for his efforts is one ugly fence.

Immigration reform? Nice name, but what does it mean? The legalization of over 12 million illegal aliens?

With today's economy hovering in near collapse, Americans won't allow that. You legalize these 12 million illegal aliens, that will result in millions more pouring over our porous border with Mexico.

Our schools and hospitals are being stretched to the breaking point with illegal aliens. Just look at Illinois and how they receive FREE benefits such as welfare, food stamps, free education with free meals for them.

Americans are tired of these free loaders. Americans are tired of having our Judicial system and jails being filled with these criminals. All of these illegal aliens are also mainly responsible for identity theft, which have ruined the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans who play by the rules.

Before any talk of legalizing, we need to strengthen our borders and port of entries. President Reagan gave amnesty to millions, only to see our country being flooded with more lawbreakers.

This only cheapens the labor costs, which only the rich fat cats can benefit from. The Middle Class is tired of competing for jobs that illegal aliens are willing to do for next to nothing, with no benefits. This madness must stop!

To Carpentersville... I am a Mexican-American USA citizen and I feel your pain, I am a woman in the construction industry and I live what you are referring to daily.   It isn't as easy as everybody thinks it is.   But being torn between American values and a Hispanic heritage made me realize all the more how much illegal aliens need to come out of the shadows.   True, there are many who ruin it for others who come here just to work and abide by rules as best they can, but they are the ones that need to be punished.  I have spoken to countless American born  builders and in their opinion in terms of labor..."you can't beat Hispanic labor".   Not because of how little they are paid (they don't know any better, they are just trying to survive), but because of their ability to produce like no other work force can.  Nor blacks nor whites can ever beat that.  If they can do those jobs that other people won't...by God they should be able to get a permit just to work here even if it is just temporarily.  The ones that ruin it for themselves by drinking and committing crimes should be deported instantly.   There are a lot of them that come here not for a citizenship, or even residency.  Their reasons vary.  There should be a reform for those that have documented "proof" that they have been abiding by rules and that they are learning or have learned the language, as well as other requirements needed according to their situations.  Those that are only coming here to work, should be given a permit to do just that...maybe just for 8 months at a time???  I don't know the exact solution, but for example the deportation that breaks up families leaving 4,000 plus children behind...well thinking about it....If this is the United States, that certainly can't be the answer.

The American people have spoken. They want to continue to use illegal drugs and place the blame solely on our neighbor; they want to sell guns to drug traffickers and they want to continue to employ, house and make consumers of illegal immigrants. Mr. Bush and now Mr. Obama cannot change what the majority of Americans want. Only individuals by way of local government have a chance to bring about real changes in both illegal drug use and illegal immigratiion. One other comment not related to this article. I would have attended the recent community dialogue in San Antonio if I had been given more notice. The invitation was not received until Monday afternoon, while the event was held on Tuesday evening. Keep up the good work, I sincerely hope something positive comes from your efforts.

The only real hope for change is for individuals to act beginning with participation at the local level of government.
